Statement: APRRN Pays Tribute to Refugee Rights Champion Barbara Harrell-Bond

The Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network (APRRN) is deeply saddened at the passing of Barbara Harrell-Bond, a powerful voice and tireless advocate for refugee protection throughout the world.

Barbara was known for her lifelong commitment to human rights advocacy and refugee protection for all refugees no matter how near or far. Since her founding the Refugees Studies Center (RSC) at the University of Oxford – the world’s first institution solely dedicated to the study of refugees – Barbara went on to live and work in Uganda and Egypt. She subsequently founded the African and Middle East Refugee Assistance (AMERA Egypt), an organisation dedicated to providing quality legal services to refugees and asylum seekers. Barbara was also instrumental in the founding of APRRN, ensuring that the network received the guidance and support it needed to flourish and develop.

APRRN extends our sincere condolences to Barbara’s extended family and all other persons touched by her passing. We have lost one of the world’s most passionate refugee rights advocates and someone whose lifetime of contributions is immeasurable and will never be forgotten.
